What to Expect From a House Cleaner: How We Keep 65–80 Weekly Cleans Consistent
Hiring a cleaner for the first time? Here's what to expect from the first visit onwards, the questions worth asking, and how we keep the standard the same every week.

Hiring a cleaner for the first time can feel a bit strange. Someone you've never met is coming into your home, and you're trusting them to do it properly, every time, without you checking.
This guide covers what to expect from a house cleaner, from the first visit to the hundredth, and the questions worth asking any cleaning company before you book. We'll also show you how we do it at It's So Clean, where our teams handle between 65 and 80 cleans a week across Auckland's North Shore.
What to expect from a house cleaner on the first visit
A good first clean is slower and more thorough than the ones that follow. It's where build-up gets dealt with and where your cleaner learns the home.
On a first visit you should expect:
- A clear scope before anyone arrives. You should know which rooms are included, what counts as an extra (like inside the oven or fridge), and roughly how long it will take.
- Cleaners who bring their own supplies. Most professional companies, including us, bring all products and equipment at no extra charge. If you prefer certain products, say so when you book.
- A few questions about your home. Pets, delicate surfaces, rooms to skip, where the bins go. The answers should be written down so the next visit doesn't depend on someone's memory.
- A first clean that may cost a little more. Homes that haven't had a professional clean in a while usually need extra time the first time round.
You don't need to be home. Many of our clients leave a key or an access code, and plenty are at work while we clean.
Why consistency is the hard part
Almost any cleaner can do a great job once. The hard part is doing the same job on the fifth visit, the twentieth, and the week your usual cleaner is on holiday.
Most frustration with a cleaner isn't about one bad clean. It's the slow drift: the skirting boards stop getting done, the shower screen gets skipped, the notes about the cat get forgotten. That drift happens when the standard lives in someone's head instead of on paper.
So when you're comparing companies, don't only ask how good their cleaners are. Ask how they make sure the standard holds.
The room-by-room checklist
We clean to a room-by-room checklist. It covers the basics everyone expects (kitchen benches, bathrooms, floors, dusting) and the bits that usually slip, like light switches, skirting boards and the tops of door frames.
The checklist does two jobs. It tells a new team member exactly what "done" looks like in your home, and it gives you something concrete to point to if anything is ever missed.
If a company can't show you what their regular clean includes, that's worth a follow-up question.
Photos and notes on the job record
Our cleaners take photos during jobs, and they're saved to the job record along with your notes and any special instructions. It means the team can see how the home was left last time, and we have a record if a question comes up later.
Behind the scenes: how JobNest keeps 65–80 weekly cleans on track
Running 65 to 80 cleans a week with several teams means a lot of moving parts: who goes where, which home has a lockbox, which client asked for the oven this week, which visit moved because of a public holiday.
Years ago we tried a few job apps, and none of them fitted how a cleaning company actually works. So our owner built his own: JobNest, the app we now run every booking, invoice and weekly report on.
For you, as a client, that shows up in a few practical ways:
- You get a confirmation before your clean, so you know it's on.
- Your notes travel with the job. Access instructions, pets and preferences are attached to your booking, not to one person's phone.
- The same checklist, whoever is on the team. If your usual team leader is away, the team covering knows exactly what your home needs.
Same cleaners, holidays and sick days
We work in small teams, each led by a team leader, and we keep the same team on your home wherever we can, so they get to know it.
People get sick and go on holiday, though, and any company that promises the same person every single week, forever, is promising something no one can deliver. What you should expect instead is a clear plan for when things change: who covers, how you'll be told, and how the standard stays the same. For us, that plan is the checklist and the notes on your job record.
Questions to ask any cleaning company before you book
Whoever you choose, these questions will tell you a lot:
- Are your cleaners insured? They should be. We're fully insured.
- Do you bring your own supplies and equipment? And is there an extra charge for them?
- What does a regular clean include, and what's extra? Ask to see it written down.
- What happens if something is missed? Look for a clear, simple answer. Ours: tell us within 24 hours and we'll come back and re-clean it, free of charge.
- Who will be cleaning my home, and what happens when they're away?
- How do you store my key or access code?
- Can I read your reviews? Look at the number of reviews, not just the stars.

Questions we get asked
What should I expect from a house cleaner the first time?
Expect a clear scope before the visit, cleaners who bring their own supplies, a few questions about your home (pets, delicate surfaces, rooms to skip) and a first clean that takes longer than later ones because it deals with build-up. On Auckland's North Shore, It's So Clean records your notes on the job so every later visit follows them.
Do cleaners bring their own supplies and equipment?
Most professional cleaning companies do. It's So Clean brings all professional cleaning supplies and equipment at no extra charge. If you'd like us to use particular products, let us know when you book.
Should I be home when the cleaner comes?
No. Many clients leave a spare key or an access code and are at work while their home is cleaned. Access instructions are stored on your booking so the team knows exactly how to get in.
Do house cleaners need to be insured?
You should only use a cleaning company that is insured. It's So Clean is fully insured, and it's worth asking any company you're considering the same question before you book.
What happens if something is missed or I'm not happy with the clean?
With It's So Clean, tell us within 24 hours and we'll come back and re-clean it, free of charge. Whoever you book, ask for their policy in writing before the first visit.
